New double mutant strain detected in India

RNS: A new double mutant variant of Covid-19 (SARS-CoV-2) has been found in India, the Central government said on Wednesday.

In a press note, the Centre said that a total of 771 COVID-19 variants of concerns (VOCs) have been detected in the country so far, in a total of 10,787 positive samples collected from domestic and international travelers.

In addition to it, several Variants of Concerns (VOCs) have been found in 18 states and UTs across India, said the ministry of health.

The government said the new double mutant variant detected in the country has so far not been found in numbers sufficient enough to establish a link with the surge in COVID-19 cases in several states.

“Genomic sequencing and epidemiological studies are continuing to further analyse the situation,” the government said.
