BSL develops high-strength, special grade steel

Bokaro: Taking a step towards self-reliant India, state-owned Steel Authority of India Limited’s (SAIL) Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) has developed a special grad steel for white goods industries.

For the first time, HDGL, a CRM-3 unit of BSL, has produced high-strength galvanized coils with a high coating thickness of 450 GSM with the yield strength of more than 350 megapascals for grain and food storage as an import option.

Developed by BSL with indigenous technology and as per IS Grade 277:2018 GP350&EN 10346:S350GD+Z350 GSM, the silo will meet the requirements of the country’s steel market in manufacturing. It will also strengthen the “Self-reliant India” mission, said Mani Kant Dhan, Chief of Communication BSL.

This type of steel is in great demand in the country, and at present, it is mainly imported from other countries. This will enhance the share of value added products, he said.

“Production of this special grade steel as an import substitute is a significant step in the backdrop of the government’s decision to introduce Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for specialty steel in July 2021,” said Dhan.

Headed by Amarendu Prakash, Director-in-Charge, BSL, the production of this special grad steel is being done by other allied department at its CRM-3 unit.

“BSL also has the distinction of developing this grade of steel for the first time in SAIL,” added Dhan.

Atanu Bhowmik, Executive Director (Operations) congratulated the CRM-3, R&C Lab and RDCIS teams for successfully developing the first high-strength galvanized coil with a high coating thickness of 450 gsm in a very cost-effective manner in a very short span of time.

Earlier, BSL and SAIL’s research unit RDCIS developed the GP 350 + 450 GSM after several labs and plant trials. After the successful trial, about 300 tonnes of coils have been rolled out.

Chief General Manager (CRM-3) Rajan Prasad, Chief General Manager (Quality) PS Kanan, Chief General Manager (RDCIS) N Mandal, General Manager (CRM-3) KK Singh’s team included Deputy General Manager (RCL) R Dodre, Assistant General Manager (CRM-3) Mahesh Singh, Assistant General Manager (RDCIS) Santosh Kumar Manager (CRM-3) Parichay Bhattacharjee, Manager (RCL) Nikhil Pratap Singh including others were significantly contributed in successfully developing GP 350+ 450 GSM steel.

Notably, HDGL of CRM-3 is capable of producing high-quality steel grades of broad gauge range as well as a line manufacturing steel grades. We at BSL are also committed to developing new grades of specialty steel as an import option in the coming times as per the needs of the country, said Dhan.
