New Delhi: India has signed a significant contract with Iran to develop and operate the strategically important Chabahar Port for a period of 10 years. The agreement, viewed as a milestone in regional connectivity, was overseen by Indian Ports and Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal during his visit to Tehran.
The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, announced the development on social media X, stating, “Scripting a new chapter in bilateral partnership! Minister @shipmin_india @moayush @sarbanandsonwal witnessed the signing of the long-term contract for the operation of the Shahid Beheshti Port in Chabahar, between India Ports Global Ltd. & Ports and Maritime organization of Iran.”
He added that the contract will enhance regional connectivity and strengthen India’s linkages with Afghanistan, Central Asia, and Eurasia.
Following the signing ceremony, Minister Sonowal expressed his delight, stating, “At Tehran, Iran today, delighted to be part of the signing of the Long Term Bilateral Contract on Chabahar Port Operations in presence of HE Mehrdad Bazrpash, Minister of Roads & Urban Development, Iran.”
He emphasized that the agreement not only strengthens ties between the two nations but also solidifies India’s position in the global supply chain and maritime sector.
The Chabahar Port has long been seen as a crucial gateway for India to access landlocked Afghanistan and Central Asian countries, bypassing Pakistan. This contract marks a significant step forward in enhancing India’s connectivity and trade prospects in the region.
