Ranchi: The state government made a significant announcement regarding the long-awaited caste census during the ongoing budget session of the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly. Minister Deepak Birua confirmed that the government is fully committed to conducting a caste survey and that the process will begin in the next financial year.
The announcement came in response to pointed questions raised by Pradeep Yadav, the leader of the Congress Legislature Party. Yadav questioned the government on the delay in implementing the caste survey, highlighting that despite a decision made in the cabinet meeting on February 12, 2024, a year has passed without any substantial progress. He also noted that other states, such as Telangana, which made the decision later, have already completed their caste surveys.
Yadav described the caste census as more than just a statistical exercise, calling it “an X-ray of society,” which reveals the socio-economic status of individuals. He pressed the government for an update on the actions taken so far and demanded a detailed report on the matter.
In response, Minister Birua explained that the Personnel Department has been tasked with overseeing the caste survey. While the responsibility for conducting the census ultimately lies with the central government, Birua assured that the state government would initiate the process in the upcoming financial year.
