Govt Approves Caste Data Collection in Next Census, Congress Calls Strategy Meet on 2 May

New Delhi: In a landmark move, the central government has approved the inclusion of caste-based data in the upcoming national census. The decision was taken by the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and is being hailed as a significant step toward inclusive policymaking.

Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the cabinet’s decision at a media briefing on Wednesday. He emphasized that the move reaffirms the Modi government’s commitment to equity and social justice. “This step reflects our dedication to the nation’s interests and social balance, much like the 10% reservation introduced earlier for the economically weaker sections,” Vaishnaw said.

The caste enumeration is expected to provide crucial socio-economic insights that could shape future welfare and development policies. The census, which was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is now being viewed as a major exercise in data-driven governance.

Meanwhile, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) has scheduled a high-level meeting on Friday to discuss the political and social implications of the government’s move. Sources indicate that the meeting will be held at 4 PM at the party’s headquarters on 24, Akbar Road.

As the inclusion of caste data re-enters the national spotlight, political parties are gearing up for debates over its potential impact on governance and electoral dynamics.
