From Crisis to Comeback: Suresh Narayanan Talks Leadership at XLRI Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur: Nestlé India Chairman and Managing Director Suresh Narayanan captivated students at XLRI – Xavier School of Management during a thought-provoking session on “Leadership in Times of Crisis.” Held under the institute’s prestigious CXO Series, the event focused on lessons learned from the 2015 Maggi crisis, one of the most significant challenges in Indian corporate history.

In a packed auditorium filled with future business leaders, Narayanan spoke with humility and clarity, reflecting on how the crisis tested not only his leadership but also the company’s values. He shared how leading Nestlé India through a storm of public distrust and regulatory scrutiny required more than strategic thinking—it demanded authenticity, empathy, and unwavering commitment to truth.

Quoting, “Crisis doesn’t build character—it reveals it,” Narayanan underlined the importance of staying grounded during uncertainty. He explained how clear communication, data-driven decisions, defined responsibilities, and emotional balance helped him steer the company back on track. More than a management lesson, the session became a deep reflection on human values and moral courage in leadership.

A touching moment came during the traditional lamp-lighting ceremony, where Narayanan respectfully removed his footwear before stepping forward—a simple yet powerful gesture that left a lasting impression on the audience.

For many students who grew up with Maggi as a household name, hearing its comeback story directly from the man who led it was both inspiring and emotional. XLRI thanked Mr. Narayanan for sharing his time and wisdom, noting that his message perfectly aligned with the institution’s vision of nurturing leaders who lead not just with skill, but with integrity, purpose, and compassion.
