Ahmedabad: In a heartfelt response to the tragic Air India Flight AI-171 crash near Ahmedabad, Tata Group Chairman and Air India chief N Chandrasekaran has announced a compensation of Rs 1 crore for the families of each deceased victim.
The Boeing 787-8 aircraft, carrying 242 passengers including 10 crew members, was en route to London Gatwick when it crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Thursday, crashing into a densely populated residential area.

Chandrasekaran expressed “deep anguish” over the tragedy, stating, “No words can adequately express the grief we feel at this moment. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost their loved ones, and with those who have been injured.”
The Tata Group has also pledged to bear the full medical expenses of the injured passengers and ensure their access to proper treatment. In a broader gesture of solidarity, the conglomerate will fund the construction of a hostel for BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad, recognizing the medical staff’s efforts during the emergency.
‘One of the darkest days’ in airline history: CEO Campbell Wilson
Air India CEO and Managing Director Campbell Wilson described the crash as one of the most difficult days in the airline’s history.
“This is a difficult day for all of us here in India. Our focus now is entirely on supporting our passengers, our crew, and their families,” Wilson said in a video statement.
He confirmed that the aircraft went down just minutes after takeoff, with emergency services rushing the injured to nearby hospitals. The airline has activated its emergency response protocols and is coordinating closely with local authorities.
Emergency Support Teams Deployed, Helpline Set Up
To support families and survivors on the ground, Air India has dispatched a team of caregivers to Ahmedabad. A special helpline has also been launched for friends and relatives seeking information about passengers on board.
Wilson noted that investigations are underway, and while it may take time to determine the exact cause of the crash, the airline is committed to full cooperation with authorities and complete transparency.
“We are doing everything within our power to help those affected,” he emphasized.
