Dhanbad: In a major boost to Indo-Russian academic cooperation, IIT-ISM Dhanbad has officially launched a prestigious Summer/Winter School programme in partnership with Saint Petersburg Mining University, Russia.
This international initiative, backed by UNESCO and funded by the International Centre for Competence in Mining Engineering Education, aims to provide students and scholars from IIT (ISM) with global exposure to advanced academic and industrial practices in the mining and energy sectors.
The programme follows a recent high-level visit by a delegation from Saint Petersburg Mining University to IIT-ISM, where both institutions reaffirmed their shared vision for deeper collaboration in education, research, and innovation across mining and earth sciences.
Running from mid-June to late July, the Summer/Winter School features four specialised modules: Petroleum Geology, Current Trends in the Oil and Gas Industry, Digital Mining, and Management in the Mineral Resource Complex.
A total of 42 students and scholars from IIT-ISM are participating in the programme. The first batch commenced its training on Petroleum Geology on June 16, while the remaining modules will roll out in sequence until July 27.
Designed as an immersive academic experience, the programme blends interactive lectures, hands-on training, expert masterclasses, industry site visits, and cultural exposure through curated tours of Russian heritage sites. The goal is to foster a holistic understanding of global trends in mining and energy, equipping participants with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
The initiative is being coordinated by Prof. Saurabh Datta Gupta of the Department of Applied Geophysics and is being conducted with the support and approval of Director Prof. Sukumar Mishra and Deputy Director Prof. Dheeraj Kumar. It is also being facilitated by the Office of International Relations and Alumni Affairs (IRAA), along with contributions from the R&D and Academic sections of the institute.
This global academic exchange marks a significant stride in IIT-ISM’s mission to strengthen international partnerships and deliver cutting-edge educational experiences to its students.
