Gaya: Monsoon rains have begun causing serious disruption in Bihar, with Gaya witnessing a sudden flood in the Falgu river after two days of continuous downpour. The abrupt rise in water level left around 10 to 12 people trapped, all of whom were successfully rescued thanks to the prompt response by local youths and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).
The incident occurred near the six-lane bridge in the Mufassil police station area, where a group of people, reportedly nomadic and homeless, had been sleeping near a pillar under the bridge. The floodwaters rose quickly, surrounding their sleeping area and cutting off escape.
Hearing their desperate cries for help, residents from nearby localities rushed to the scene and launched a rescue effort. Many individuals were pulled to safety using ropes thrown from the bridge. However, while human lives were saved, several animals were swept away by the strong current.
Upon being alerted, the SDRF team arrived at the spot and safely evacuated those still stranded in the middle of the river. Officials later confirmed that the victims were unaware of the rising water levels as they slept and that local intervention played a key role in preventing a tragedy.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that Gaya and surrounding areas have been experiencing persistent rainfall, but Thursday’s intense downpour pushed the Falgu river beyond danger levels, triggering flash floods in nearby low-lying areas.
Authorities have urged residents to remain alert as the monsoon intensifies across Bihar.
