IIT-ISM Students Get Global Exposure at Russian Mining University

Dhanbad: In a major stride towards global academic collaboration, the Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad, has sent its third group of students to Russia for advanced training at St. Petersburg Mining University. The initiative is part of the Indo-Russian Summer/Winter School Programme aimed at providing students with international exposure and in-depth knowledge in energy and mineral-related fields.

Twelve students and scholars from IIT (ISM) began their specialized training on June 30, 2025, following the successful training of two earlier batches. The programme, launched after a recent Russian delegation’s visit to the institute, is jointly supported by UNESCO and IIT (ISM), with funding from the International Centre for Competence in Mining Engineering Education.

Prof. Saurabh Datta Gupta, Associate Professor in Applied Geophysics and programme coordinator, informed that the first batch completed a course on Petroleum Geology (June 16–29), while the second group is currently undergoing training on Current Trends in the Oil and Gas Industry (June 26–July 6). A fourth batch is also set to leave soon for training in Management in the Mineral Resource Complex (July 14–27).

“This programme is a gateway to global learning for our students. It blends theory with real-world application through lectures, hands-on sessions, site visits, and cultural exchange,” Prof. Datta Gupta stated.

Six departments from IIT (ISM)—Applied Geology, Applied Geophysics, Mining Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Fuel, Mineral and Metallurgical Engineering—are taking part in this prestigious initiative.

With this growing international partnership, IIT (ISM) continues to reinforce its vision of grooming future-ready professionals equipped with global insights and practical expertise in the rapidly evolving energy and mineral sectors.
