Gaya, Bihar: Tension erupted in Imamganj area of Gaya district on Friday after a youth died during a police chase, triggering violent protests from angry villagers who later torched a police patrol vehicle and blocked the road.

The deceased, identified as Devbali alias Babu Chaudhary, a resident of Meghasthan village, reportedly died after being hit by a police vehicle that was chasing him on suspicion of transporting illegal liquor. The incident occurred around 11 a.m. near a brick kiln in the area.

According to local sources, Devbali was standing near the kiln when a police vehicle from Kothi police station arrived. On seeing the police, he tried to flee on his motorcycle, prompting the officers to pursue him. During the chase, Devbali allegedly lost control of his bike, fell, and was fatally struck by the police vehicle following closely behind.

Following the incident, enraged villagers gathered in large numbers, pelted stones at police personnel—injuring two—and later set the patrol vehicle on fire. They also blocked the road, demanding justice for the deceased.

Eyewitness Vinay Kumar, a local villager, alleged that the police vehicle was speeding and there was no liquor found on Devbali. “He was chased based on mere suspicion, and that cost him his life,” he said.

Imamganj Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Amit Kumar confirmed the incident and said an investigation is underway. “The police suspected Devbali of being involved in liquor trade and began pursuing him. During the chase, an unfortunate accident occurred leading to his death. Compensation and immediate assistance have been provided to his wife for the last rites,” he said.

Authorities have assured appropriate action will be taken against those found responsible. The situation in the area remains tense, and additional police force has been deployed to prevent further unrest.
