India’s Mega Zojila Tunnel Project Backed by SAIL’s 31,000-Tonne Steel Supply

New Delhi: In a major boost to India’s infrastructure drive, Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has emerged as the largest steel supplier for the ambitious Zojila Tunnel Project, set to be India’s longest road tunnel and Asia’s longest two-way highway tunnel.

The Maharatna PSU, known for its pivotal role in nation-building, has so far supplied over 31,000 tonnes of steel, including TMT re-bars, structural steel, and plates, for the under-construction mega project that will connect Srinagar to Leh via Drass and Kargil — ensuring all-weather connectivity through the rugged Himalayas.

Nestled at an altitude of 11,578 feet, the 30+ km Zojila Tunnel is being hailed as a strategic game-changer, not just for civilian mobility but also for military logistics along the sensitive border region. The project, targeted for completion by 2027, is part of the critical Srinagar-Kargil-Leh National Highway initiative, enhancing both regional accessibility and national security.

“SAIL’s consistent and quality-driven supply underscores its unwavering commitment to India’s infrastructure journey,” said officials, noting the company’s long-standing contributions to marquee national projects such as the Atal Tunnel, Chenab Railway Bridge, Bandra-Worli Sea Link, Bogibeel Bridge, and Dhola Sadiya Bridge.

With the Zojila Tunnel poised to unlock massive economic potential in the region, SAIL’s involvement reinforces its legacy as the backbone of India’s steel-intensive progress.
