“Blow to Teacher Dignity”: Urdu Educators Oppose Restructuring of Teaching Posts in Jharkhand

Ranchi: The Jharkhand Rajya Urdu Shikshak Sangh has strongly condemned the state government’s recent cabinet decision to restructure school teaching posts, calling it a serious setback for teachers’ dignity, employment prospects, and the overall quality of education in the state.

According to the Sangh, the government has decided to abolish the existing Urdu Assistant Teacher positions and replace them with new designations such as “Assistant Acharya” and “Secondary Acharya” under the framework of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

This, they argue, not only erodes the professional identity of teachers but also slashes their pay scales significantly. Earlier, TGT and PGT teachers were appointed with grade pays of ₹4600 and ₹4800 respectively, but the new posts carry only ₹4200 grade pay—despite increased responsibilities.

Amin Ahmed, Central General Secretary of the Sangh, said the decision is both unjust and demoralizing. He noted that Jharkhand had received 4401 Urdu Assistant Teacher posts during its formation from Bihar, but only 689 were filled between 2014 and 2015. Though the remaining 3712 posts were shifted to the non-plan head in 2023 after continuous efforts by the union, they have still not been filled. Now, scrapping these sanctioned posts altogether, he said, is an act of betrayal against educated, unemployed youth who were hoping for fair recruitment.

Ahmed further criticised the move to merge headmaster and principal roles into a single “Principal” post with downgraded salary benefits. He also expressed concern over the excessive workload being placed on individual teachers, who under the new system would be expected to teach from classes 9 to 12 alone.

The Sangh fears that these changes will not only degrade the professional standing of teachers but also impact the quality of education in government schools. They have urged the state government to immediately roll back the decision and restore the original TGT and PGT system with appropriate pay scales.

Sangh spokesperson Shahzad Anwar said they plan to take up the matter directly with the Chief Minister and the Education Minister. If the government does not reconsider, he warned, the union will be compelled to launch a state-wide agitation.
