Lahore: At least 30 passengers were injured after several coaches of the Islamabad Express derailed near Kala Shah Kaku in Sheikhupura district, about 50 km from Lahore, on Friday evening, officials confirmed.
According to Pakistan Railways, the train was en route from Lahore to Rawalpindi when the mishap occurred. A total of 10 coaches reportedly derailed during the incident, with three passengers critically injured.
Rescue teams were promptly dispatched to the site and managed to shift the injured to nearby medical facilities. While 22 of the injured received first aid at the scene, seven others were taken to the Tehsil Headquarters Hospital in Muridke for further treatment.
“There have been no casualties reported so far,” officials said, adding that rescue efforts are still ongoing to extricate a few passengers trapped in the derailed coaches.
Punjab Rescue Service spokesperson Farooq Ahmed told Dawn News that six emergency vehicles and 25 rescuers were immediately mobilised for the operation. “Most passengers sustained minor injuries such as scratches, bruises, and superficial wounds,” he said.
An investigation into the cause of the derailment is expected to follow.
