OpenAI Sets Up First India Office, Launches ChatGPT Go at ₹399

New Delhi: Global AI powerhouse OpenAI is making its biggest push into India yet, announcing the opening of its first office in New Delhi and the launch of an India-exclusive subscription plan.

The move, confirmed Friday, signals the company’s fastest expansion in South Asia. Until now, OpenAI had just one employee in India, but it has now formally registered an entity and started hiring for a local team, according to CNBCTV18.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed optimism, saying: “The level of excitement and opportunity for AI in India is incredible. India has all the ingredients to become a global AI leader—amazing tech talent, a world-class developer ecosystem, and strong government support through the IndiaAI Mission.”

ChatGPT Go: India-Only Launch

Alongside its expansion, OpenAI rolled out ChatGPT Go, a low-cost subscription plan priced at just ₹399 ($4.57) per month. Designed specifically for India’s nearly one billion internet users, the plan is accessible on web, iOS, Android, macOS, and Windows platforms.

The service is geo-restricted to India and can be subscribed to via UPI or credit card. ChatGPT Go offers advanced data analysis, extended memory for personalized responses, and faster performance.

OpenAI already offers premium options in India, including ChatGPT Plus at ₹1,999/month and ChatGPT Pro at ₹19,900/month. With ChatGPT Go, the company appears to be targeting a wider audience at an affordable price point.

Why It Matters

The announcement underscores India’s growing importance in the global AI race. With its vast talent pool and booming digital ecosystem, the country is fast becoming a key market for AI-driven products and innovation.
