New Delhi: The Department of Posts has announced a temporary suspension of all postal services to the United States starting August 25, citing new US import rules. The move follows an executive order by Washington that ends duty-free exemption on overseas goods worth up to $800 from August 29.
Under the revised framework, all parcels to the US will attract customs duties, though gifts worth up to $100 remain exempt. India Post said refunds will be issued for undeliverable items and assured efforts are underway to restore services quickly.
The disruption comes as several European nations—Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, France, Austria, and the UK—also halted shipments to America, pointing to confusion over the new tariff regime. Deutsche Post, DHL Parcel Germany, PostNord, and Poste Italiane confirmed they are suspending deliveries containing goods, while letters and documents remain unaffected.
The US decision, issued under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, forms part of President Donald Trump’s latest trade measures. A parallel US–EU tariff deal has already imposed 15% duties on most European goods, intensifying uncertainty for exporters and postal operators worldwide.
Private couriers such as DHL Express will continue to operate, though national postal services warn of delays and rising costs.
