New Delhi: India and Fiji on Monday took a major step in strengthening their partnership by signing seven key agreements covering health, standardisation, and capacity building, along with big-ticket development projects.

After wide-ranging talks with visiting Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Ligamamada Rabuka at Hyderabad House, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India will build a 100-bed super-speciality hospital in Suva. He further said dialysis units, sea ambulances, and Jan Aushadhi centres will be set up to ensure affordable healthcare for Fijians.

Modi also underlined the need for closer cooperation in cybersecurity, data protection, and counter-terrorism, calling terrorism a “grave threat to humanity.” He said both nations have drawn up an action plan to boost defence and security ties.

On climate change, the Prime Minister stressed that India and Fiji share common concerns and are working together in renewable energy partnerships. Both countries are part of global initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance, Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, and Global Biofuels Alliance.

Fijian PM Rabuka praised the outcomes of the visit, saying his delegation was “impressed beyond expectations” with the depth of cooperation achieved. He reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to promoting peace, stability, and development alongside India, adding that Fijians “continue to treasure” their close bond with New Delhi.

He recalled the honour of hosting President Droupadi Murmu in Fiji last year, describing it as a moment of pride for his nation.
