PM Modi in Tokyo for 2-Day Visit; To Attend 15th India-Japan Annual Summit

Tokyo: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Tokyo this morning on a two-day official visit to Japan to participate in the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit. The visit, at the invitation of Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, is expected to give a major boost to the Special Strategic and Global Partnership that the two nations have steadily nurtured over the past decade.

Modi received a warm welcome at Tokyo’s Imperial Hotel, where members of the Indian diaspora greeted him with chants, cheers, and cultural performances, including Kathak and classical music.

Before the high-profile summit, the Prime Minister is scheduled to attend a business event. According to JETRO’s Executive Vice President Kazuya Nakajo, over 80% of Japanese companies operating in India plan to expand in the coming years — a sign of growing investor confidence.

Later in the day, Modi and his counterpart Ishiba will review the full range of bilateral ties, with agreements expected in defense, security, trade, technology, and innovation. The summit is also likely to see new initiatives in emerging sectors like AI and semiconductors.

Ahead of his departure, Modi said the visit would not only advance economic cooperation but also strengthen cultural and civilizational bonds between the two countries.

From Tokyo, he will travel to Tianjin, China, to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit at the invitation of President Xi Jinping. There, he is expected to engage with global leaders, including President Putin and President Xi, on issues of regional peace, security, and sustainable development.
