Washington: US President Donald Trump has acknowledged that his imposition of a 50 percent tariff on India over its Russian oil imports strained relations between Washington and New Delhi.
Speaking to Fox News, Trump said, “India was one of Russia’s biggest customers. I put a 50% tariff on India because they were buying oil from Russia. That’s not an easy decision.” He added, “It’s a big deal, and yes, it caused a rift with India.”

The comments come shortly after Trump reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to resolve trade tensions and the ongoing tariff dispute.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, “I am pleased to announce that India and the United States are continuing negotiations to address trade barriers between our two nations. I look forward to speaking with my very good friend, Prime Minister Modi, in the upcoming weeks. I am confident we will reach a successful outcome for both countries.”
Responding to Trump, PM Modi said, “India and the US are close friends and natural partners. I am confident our trade negotiations will unlock the limitless potential of our partnership. Our teams are working to conclude these discussions at the earliest. I look forward to speaking with President Trump so we can secure a brighter, more prosperous future for our people.”
Background: US-India Tariff Dispute
The Trump administration, previously seen as India-friendly, had imposed a 25 percent tariff on Indian goods for high tariffs on American exports, and an additional 25 percent for India’s purchases of Russian oil amid the Ukraine conflict.
Since early 2022, India significantly increased imports of discounted Russian crude oil, now over 30 percent of its total crude imports, refining and exporting petroleum products worldwide. Critics, particularly in the US, argue this indirectly funds Russia’s war effort.
In response, the US imposed tariffs and trade measures to discourage this behavior. India, meanwhile, has stated it will protect its national interests and economic security. PM Modi emphasized that India will not compromise on the welfare of farmers, fishermen, and livestock rearers.
