3 Sustain Severe Burn Injuries at SAIL's Bokaro Steel Plant

Bokaro: A serious industrial accident rocked SAIL’s Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) on Saturday afternoon when molten metal spilled in SMS-2, leaving three workers severely injured.

According to eyewitnesses, the mishap occurred around 3 pm after a crane’s rope snapped, causing a ladle carrying hot metal to overturn uncontrollably. The spill triggered a massive fire inside the unit, and fire brigade teams battled for hours before finally bringing the situation under control.

The injured — identified as Brajesh Mahatha, Praveen, and Om Prakash — sustained severe burn injuries and were rushed to Bokaro General Hospital (BGH). Doctors said Brajesh’s condition is critical, while Praveen and Om Prakash are stable. All three are contract workers of M/s Bhushan Engineering, sources confirmed.

Emergency Response & Halt in Production

Following the accident, senior officials rushed to the spot. The SMS-2 unit has been sealed off, and production has been suspended. With molten metal solidifying on the floor, cleanup is expected to be a lengthy process, as the frozen mass must be cut and removed before any maintenance or restoration work can begin.

Safety Concerns at SAIL Deepen

The accident has once again raised serious questions about workplace safety at BSL. Just weeks ago, a fatal mishap in the blast furnace section claimed the life of a worker in another hot metal incident. In that case, two general managers were suspended and later reinstated following an internal inquiry.

The recurrence of such accidents in quick succession has intensified scrutiny over safety oversight, equipment condition, and management accountability at one of SAIL’s most important production hubs.
