Navi Mumbai International Airport Set for Launch: India’s Next Mega Aviation Hub
Mumbai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the much-awaited Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) on October 8, marking a major milestone in India’s aviation infrastructure. The world-class greenfield airport, built at a cost of ₹19,647 crore, will serve as the second major gateway for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA).
Commercial flight operations are likely to begin in December, following the aerodrome licence issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on September 30.
India’s Next Big Aviation Hub
Developed by Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd., the project is jointly owned by the Adani Group (74%) and the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) of Maharashtra (26%). Spread over 1,160 hectares, NMIA is designed to eventually feature four terminals, with a total capacity of 90 million passengers annually and 3.25 million metric tonnes of cargo handling — placing it among Asia’s largest aviation hubs.
CIDCO Vice Chairman and Managing Director Vijay Singhal confirmed that PM Modi will arrive at the new facility around 2:40 p.m., tour the terminal, and address a public gathering. “The second airport of Maha Mumbai — Navi Mumbai International Airport — will be inaugurated by the Prime Minister on October 8,” Singhal told PTI.

Terminal 1 Ready for Takeoff
In its first phase, NMIA will open Terminal 1, capable of handling 20 million passengers annually and 0.8 million metric tonnes of cargo, along with a single operational runway. The airport has been assigned the IATA code ‘NMI’.
Leading domestic airlines — including Air India Group, IndiGo, and Akasa Air — have already announced plans to move part of their operations to the new airport.
Future-Ready and Eco-Smart
Once fully operational, NMIA and CSMIA together are projected to handle nearly 150 million passengers a year, turning the Mumbai region into a global aviation hub. The total project cost is expected to reach ₹1 lakh crore upon completion of all phases.
NMIA will also be India’s first multi-modal connected airport, linked seamlessly by expressways, metro lines, suburban rail, and even water taxi services.
Promoted as a “green airport,” NMIA will feature storage facilities for sustainable aviation fuel and an Automated Passenger People Mover system to connect all terminals internally.
