NDA Seals Bihar Seat-Sharing Deal: BJP, JD(U) to Contest 101 Seats Each, LJP Gets 29

Patna/New Delhi: After weeks of negotiations and backchannel parleys, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has finally clinched its seat-sharing formula for the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections. Union Minister and BJP leader Dharmendra Pradhan announced the agreement on X on Saturday.

Under the pact, both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) will contest 101 seats each in the 243-member Assembly. Smaller allies — Upendra Kushwaha’s Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM) and Jitan Ram Manjhi’s Hindustan Awam Morcha (HAM) — have been allotted six seats apiece.

The final hurdle was over Chirag Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), which has now secured 29 seats after intense discussions. The LJP(RV) had initially demanded 40–45 seats, while the BJP was ready to offer only 25. Several rounds of meetings between Pradhan and Paswan reportedly helped break the deadlock.

Although the BJP conceded just one additional seat, both the BJP and JD(U) had to trim their own tallies to accommodate the LJP’s share. In the 2020 Assembly polls, JD(U) had contested 115 seats and BJP 110 — a clear sign that both major partners have scaled back to keep the alliance intact.

Party insiders said Chirag Paswan’s strong pitch for recognition of his party’s 2024 Lok Sabha performance proved decisive. The LJP(RV) had won all five Lok Sabha seats it contested, and Paswan demanded at least two Assembly seats within each of those constituencies, along with representation for senior party leaders.

With the deal sealed, the NDA aims to project unity in Bihar — a state where coalition arithmetic has long dictated political destiny.

The Bihar Assembly election will be held in two phases — on November 6 and November 11 — with counting on November 14.
