Sharm el-Sheikh (Egypt): U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday lavished praise on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him “a very good friend” during a peace summit on the Gaza conflict in Egypt — even as global attention remained fixed on a fragile truce in the Middle East.
“India is a great country with a very good friend of mine at the top — he’s done a fantastic job,” Trump said, with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief General Asim Munir standing nearby. Turning toward Sharif, Trump added with a smile, “I think Pakistan and India are going to live very nicely together,” drawing laughter from the audience.
According to Dawn News, Trump thanked Pakistan’s leadership for helping facilitate the Gaza ceasefire, which saw Hamas release the final 20 surviving hostages under a U.S.-brokered truce.
In an unexpected moment, Sharif announced that Pakistan had nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, citing his “extraordinary contribution to global peace.” “President Trump not only helped stop the war between India and Pakistan but also brought peace to Gaza,” Sharif said. “He has saved millions of lives — this honor is well deserved.”
President Trump, known for his bold diplomatic claims, reiterated that his administration had “stopped seven wars worldwide,” including tensions in South Asia — a claim that India has publicly dismissed in the past.
Earlier in the day, Trump visited Israel before flying to Egypt for the summit, where leaders, including Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, joined discussions on the region’s post-ceasefire roadmap.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the release of hostages, calling it “a tribute to the courage of their families,” and lauded President Trump’s “sincere and sustained efforts” toward restoring peace in the Middle East.
