Gopichand Hinduja Dies at 85, Leaves Behind £32 Billion Hinduja Legacy

London: Gopichand Hinduja (Gopichand P. Hinduja), chairman of the Hinduja Group and one of the world’s most powerful industrialists, passed away in London at the age of 85.

Fondly called “GP,” he was the second of the four Hinduja brothers who transformed a small trading enterprise into one of the world’s largest family-owned conglomerates. His elder brother Srichand Hinduja died in 2023, while Prakash and Ashok Hinduja survive him.

Born into a Sindhi business family, Gopichand joined the group in 1950, helping expand it beyond its Indo-Middle East roots into a global empire spanning 11 sectors — from automotive and banking to IT, healthcare, and energy. Flagship firms like Ashok Leyland, IndusInd Bank, and NXTDIGITAL became hallmarks of his leadership.

Educated at Jai Hind College, Mumbai, Gopichand received honorary doctorates from the University of Westminster and Richmond College for his contribution to global business and philanthropy.

According to the 2025 Sunday Times Rich List, the Hinduja family remains the UK’s wealthiest, with an estimated fortune of £32.3 billion. Despite occasional internal disputes, the group continued to expand its footprint across over 30 countries, employing tens of thousands worldwide.

Known for his disciplined lifestyle, philanthropy, and quiet diplomacy, Gopichand was often seen as a bridge between East and West. Under his guidance, the Hinduja Group deepened its investments in India while growing its presence in Europe and the Middle East.

Funeral details are expected to be announced by the family soon.
