Patna: Singer-turned-politician Maithili Thakur delivered a striking victory for the BJP on Thursday, clinching the Alinagar seat by defeating RJD candidate Binod Mishra with a margin of over 11,730 votes. At just 25, she is set to become Bihar’s youngest MLA, marking a remarkable ascent from music reality shows to the state’s power corridors.
Throughout the day, Thakur maintained a strong lead — at one point ahead by over 9,000 votes — as counting trends poured in steadily from Alinagar and across the state.
Thakur, who joined the BJP barely a month before the two-phase Assembly polls on November 6 and 11, quickly became a talking point in Bihar’s political circles, energising young voters and drawing large crowds on the campaign trail.
Her win adds to the NDA’s sweeping surge, with the alliance crossing the 200-seat mark, setting the stage for Nitish Kumar’s 10th term as chief minister. The mandate comes against a backdrop of unemployment, migration, and economic distress — issues that dominated the campaign season.
In sharp contrast, the Mahagathbandhan witnessed a dramatic collapse, struggling to maintain leads in less than 30 seats as the RJD-Congress coalition lost ground from the early hours of counting.
Within the NDA, the BJP has emerged as the single-largest party once again with over 90 seats, followed by JD(U) with more than 80, LJPRV at 20, and HAM at 4 seats. On the other side, the RJD is hovering around 25 seats, while its allies remain stuck in single digits.
Maithili Thakur’s electoral debut now stands out as one of the most striking stories of this Bihar election — a young cultural icon stepping into politics and securing a thumping mandate in her very first contest.
