Bokaro’s Mohan Kumar Mangalam Stadium Celebrates 50 Glorious Years

Bokaro: The Mohan Kumar Mangalam (MKM) Stadium — the pride of Bokaro Steel City and one of Jharkhand’s most iconic sporting destinations — completed its 50-year journey today, marking a golden milestone with fresh enthusiasm and renewed vision. Inaugurated on 21 November 1975 by then BSL Managing Director K.C. Khanna, the 40,000-capacity arena has remained a symbol of sporting excellence, community spirit and cultural pride.

Built in the formative years of Bokaro Steel City and named after former Union Steel & Mines Minister Mohan Kumar Mangalam, the stadium was envisioned as more than just a sports ground — it was crafted as a cradle for talent. With a top-grade football field, 400-metre athletics track, dedicated archery ranges, multiple training hubs, VIP galleries and a fully equipped press box, MKM Stadium stood ahead of its time and continues to be one of eastern India’s premier sports venues.

Over the decades, the stadium has hosted countless memorable moments —
—from the fiercely fought Bokaro Steel Football Cup,
—to the electrifying 1980 exhibition match where Russia’s famed Cosmos Club took on the Border Security Force, placing Bokaro firmly on the global football map.

The stadium has also nurtured some of India’s finest athletes. Olympian and Arjuna Awardee Peter Thangaraj, Commonwealth Games gold medalist Pratima Kumari, and Asian Bench Press bronze medalist J. Barman all sharpened their skills here. Renowned coaches Rajendra Prasad and R.B. Saha trained generations of young sportsmen on this very turf. National-level athletic meets held here have drawn some of the country’s top performers.

Even today, MKM Stadium remains vibrant with football, athletics, handball and community activities, while also serving as the city’s ceremonial ground for Independence Day and Republic Day celebrations.

The Golden Jubilee celebrations kicked off today with Executive Director (HR) Rajshree Banerjee releasing balloons to mark the historic occasion, followed by the felicitation of former athletes, players and sports department veterans.

As MKM Stadium steps into its next 50 years, Bokaro Steel Plant has reaffirmed its commitment to preserving its legacy, upgrading its infrastructure and keeping the city’s sporting spirit alive for generations to come.
