Bokaro: The fourth edition of ‘Happy Street’ returned with vibrant energy in Bokaro Steel City on Sunday, turning a key city road into a lively, traffic-free hub of fitness, fun and community bonding. Launched under the theme “Active Bokaro, Healthy Bokaro,” the programme once again reaffirmed the city’s growing identity as a model for active urban living.
The one-kilometre stretch from Gandhi Chowk to Bokaro Mall, popularly known as Mahatma Gandhi Path in Sector-4, was transformed into a vehicle-free activity zone, offering residents a refreshing and energetic start to the weekend. The event was jointly inaugurated by Bokaro Steel’s Acting Director Alok Verma and Deputy Commissioner Ajay Nath Jha, who formally flagged off the programme.

Residents of all age groups participated enthusiastically, with children stealing the spotlight through colourful performances that showcased their hidden talents. CISF personnel engaged with visitors by explaining security measures, while health department teams conducted basic health check-ups and shared wellness tips. The event also saw active participation from BSL, CISF, JAP, schools, NGOs, hospitals, private organisations, Rotary Club, Lions Club, and several community groups.

Launched earlier by Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL), the Happy Street initiative aims to reclaim public roads for people by promoting fitness, sports, art and social interaction in a vehicle-free environment. The programme, which began this Sunday, will now be held every Sunday until January 4, 2026.
Speaking to reporters, Kundan Kumar, CGM (BSL), said the initiative gives citizens a rare sense of freedom on city roads. “Happy Street is about enjoying public spaces without stress. People can laugh, play, dance and simply live the moment,” he said, adding that activities include football, basketball, volleyball, cricket, yoga, karate, taekwondo, skating, cycling, jogging, painting, music, singing and dance.
Bokaro Gets Global Boost, Upgraded to ‘Candidate City’ Status
The event also coincided with a major global recognition for Bokaro. India’s first and only Global Active ‘Partner City’ has now been upgraded to a ‘Candidate City’ under the International Olympic Committee-supported Global Active City Mission. The mission was launched in Bokaro in 2022 under the leadership of SAIL Bokaro.Due to Bokaro’s sustained success and growing reputation for organising large-scale sports, fitness, yoga, dance, music and cultural activities, the Global Active City Committee based in Lausanne, Switzerland, approved the city’s elevation in status.
Confirming the development, Jaideep Sarkar said the upgrade reflects Bokaro Steel City’s rising global profile as a benchmark for active, healthy and community-driven urban living.
