New Delhi: Senior journalist Sangeeta Barua has made history by becoming the first woman President of the Press Club of India (PCI), as her entire panel swept the club’s elections with commanding margins.
Barua won the top post with 1,019 votes. Jatin Gandhi was elected Vice-President with 1,029 votes, while Afzal Imam secured the General Secretary’s post with 948 votes. P.R. Sunil Kumar and Aditi Rajput were elected unopposed as Joint Secretary and Treasurer, respectively. All Managing Committee members also recorded decisive victories.
The result is being seen as a strong mandate for independent leadership at the country’s premier journalists’ body, with high expectations that the new team will aggressively defend press freedom and journalists’ rights amid growing challenges to the profession.
