PM Modi Receives Warm Welcome at Jordan, Marks First Bilateral Visit in 37 Years

Amman: Prime Minister Narendra Modi (PM Modi) arrived in Jordan on Monday, kick-starting his three-nation diplomatic tour with a warm reception from the Indian diaspora and Jordanian leadership. Jordan’s Prime Minister Jafar Hassan personally received Modi at the airport, underlining the significance Amman attaches to the visit.

Taking to social media platform X, Modi expressed gratitude for the reception, saying he was confident the visit would further strengthen bilateral ties between the two countries. He also lauded the Indian community in Jordan for their enthusiastic welcome, calling their affection and pride in India’s progress a reflection of the enduring bond between India and its diaspora.

Jordan is the first leg of Modi’s visit, which also includes Ethiopia and Oman. The stop in Amman carries special diplomatic weight—it is the first full bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Jordan in 37 years and coincides with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

Ethiopia Next: Focus on Global South

From Jordan, Modi will travel to Ethiopia at the invitation of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali. Addis Ababa, which hosts the headquarters of the African Union, holds strategic importance for India, especially after the AU was inducted as a permanent member of the G20 during India’s presidency in 2023.

During his Ethiopia visit, Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral talks, interact with the Indian diaspora, and address a joint session of the Ethiopian Parliament. His address is expected to highlight India’s democratic journey—often described by Modi as the “Mother of Democracy”—and reinforce India–Ethiopia cooperation within the Global South.

Oman Visit to Mark 70 Years of Ties

The final stop of the tour will be the Sultanate of Oman, where India and Oman are celebrating 70 years of diplomatic relations. In Muscat, Modi will meet His Majesty the Sultan of Oman to deepen strategic, commercial, and economic cooperation.

The Prime Minister will also engage with the Indian community in Oman, recognising the diaspora’s crucial role in strengthening people-to-people ties and sustaining the long-standing partnership between the two countries.

The three-nation tour underscores India’s renewed diplomatic push across West Asia, Africa, and the Gulf, with a strong emphasis on historical ties, diaspora engagement, and strategic partnerships.
