Tribute to Heroes: Celebrating 54 Years of Vijay Diwas

Vinod Chandrashekhar Dixit

December 16, 2025, marks the 54th anniversary of Vijay Diwas, a day etched in India’s history for its decisive victory over Pakistan in the 1971 Indo-Pak War. The day commemorates the surrender of Pakistani forces in Dhaka, an event that led to the liberation of Bangladesh and the end of one of South Asia’s most defining conflicts.

Vijay Diwas stands as a solemn national occasion to honour the bravery, sacrifice, and professionalism of the Indian Armed Forces. India’s strategic military intervention, led by Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, culminated in the capture of over 90,000 Pakistani soldiers, bringing a swift end to widespread atrocities against the Bengali population. The victory remains a powerful symbol of India’s military prowess and humanitarian values.

In India, the day is observed with ceremonies at war memorials, tributes to veterans, and patriotic events across the country. In Bangladesh, December 16 is celebrated as Victory Day, a national holiday that acknowledges India’s pivotal role in its struggle for independence. Together, the two nations remember a historic moment that reshaped the region and reaffirmed commitments to sovereignty, peace, and regional stability.

The Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 began on December 3 and lasted just 13 days, officially ending on December 16 with Pakistan’s surrender. India prevailed because of unwavering willpower, faith, and unity, and the fearlessness with which its soldiers delivered a resolute and unforgettable response. The Indian Army’s undeterred courage, dedication, and professionalism changed the course of history, bringing glory and honour to the nation. It was the first major military victory of a young Indian democracy, strengthening the confidence of both the leadership and the people.

On the western front, Indian forces responded swiftly to enemy movements and captured approximately 15,010 square kilometres of Pakistani territory. In the east, the Indian Army fought alongside Bangladesh’s Mukti Bahini, leading to the emergence of Bangladesh as a sovereign nation. This historic triumph remains unique and unparalleled—our forces fought selflessly for a just and noble cause: the liberation of the people of erstwhile East Pakistan and the creation of an independent Bangladesh.

There are many reasons to revisit the victory of 1971 in public memory. It is not only because it was a resounding triumph, but because a nation that ignores its army cannot afford peace. We feel secure in our homes because of the vigilance and sacrifice of our armed forces. If India stands safe and independent today, it is because of their relentless commitment.

On this Vijay Diwas, we salute the heroes of 1971, pay homage to the martyrs who laid down their lives, and honour all those who have served the nation across wars and generations. Their courage and sacrifice must never be forgotten.
