No Network? BSNL Rolls Out Wi-Fi Calling Across India at No Extra Cost
New Delhi: Marking the new year with a major connectivity upgrade, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has launched Wi-Fi Calling (Voice over Wi-Fi / VoWiFi) across all telecom circles in India, with the service going live from January 1, 2026. The nationwide rollout is expected to significantly improve voice call quality for users facing weak or patchy mobile signals.
What is Wi-Fi Calling?
Wi-Fi Calling is a technology that allows voice calls (and SMS) to be made over a Wi-Fi network instead of a mobile tower. As long as the user is connected to a stable Wi-Fi connection—such as home broadband or office internet—calls can be placed even in “no network” or low-signal areas. Importantly, the call still uses the user’s regular mobile number, not an internet ID.

Clear calls even where mobile signals fail
BSNL’s Wi-Fi Calling is being seen as a boon for rural, hilly and remote regions, as well as for indoor locations like basements, apartments and office buildings where cellular signals often drop. Users connected to BSNL Bharat Fiber or any other broadband service can now continue making and receiving calls without interruption.
No app, no number change
One of the key highlights of BSNL’s VoWiFi service is its simplicity. No third-party app is required. Calls can be made directly from the phone’s default dialer, using the existing BSNL number.
If Wi-Fi weakens mid-call, the handset automatically switches between Wi-Fi and the mobile network, ensuring the conversation continues seamlessly.
No extra charges
BSNL has clarified that Wi-Fi Calling comes at no additional cost. Calls made over Wi-Fi are billed exactly like regular voice calls and are covered under the user’s existing tariff plan—with no extra fees or hidden charges.
Device support
The service is supported on most modern smartphones. Users only need to enable the Wi-Fi Calling option from their phone settings. For device-specific queries, BSNL has advised customers to contact the nearest service centre or helpline.
Part of BSNL’s network modernisation push
The nationwide VoWiFi rollout is a key milestone in BSNL’s broader network modernisation programme, aimed at improving service quality and easing pressure on mobile towers. Telecom experts say the move helps bridge long-standing coverage gaps and brings BSNL closer to global best practices in voice services.
Bottom line: With Wi-Fi Calling launched across India from January 1, BSNL has taken a decisive step to tackle the persistent “no network” problem—offering subscribers clearer calls, wider coverage and uninterrupted connectivity, without any extra cost.
