Sunetra Pawar becomes Maharashtra’s first woman Deputy Chief Minister

Mumbai: Maharashtra created history on Saturday as Sunetra Pawar took oath as the state’s first woman Deputy Chief Minister, marking a major milestone in its political journey.

The swearing-in ceremony was held at Raj Bhavan in the presence of senior leaders from the ruling alliance and top state officials. Her appointment fills a crucial leadership role in the state government and signals a new phase of political continuity and stability.

Sunetra Pawar, known for her long involvement in social and public welfare initiatives, now steps into a key executive position at a time when Maharashtra faces major governance and economic challenges. Party leaders said her elevation reflects both confidence in her leadership and the need to strengthen administrative coordination at the highest level.

Political observers view the move as both symbolic and strategic — breaking a long-standing gender barrier while reinforcing the ruling coalition’s power structure.

With this historic appointment, Maharashtra joins the growing list of states witnessing increased representation of women in top constitutional and executive offices.
