India Announces $175M Economic Package for Seychelles, Signs 7 MoUs

New Delhi: Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi on Monday announced a special economic assistance package worth $175 million for Seychelles, underscoring India’s commitment to deepening ties with its key Indian Ocean partner. The announcement came after bilateral talks with Seychelles President Dr. Patrick Herminie, followed by a joint press interaction in New Delhi.

The package is aimed at supporting a wide spectrum of sectors, including social housing, e-mobility, vocational training, healthcare, defence cooperation, and maritime security. Alongside the financial assistance, the two countries signed seven Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering areas such as health, meteorology, electronics and information technology, and good governance.

Broadening Cooperation Across Sectors

Among the agreements is a technical and scientific collaboration pact between the India Meteorological Department and the Seychelles Meteorological Authority, designed to strengthen weather and climate-related cooperation.

Prime Minister Modi highlighted that relations between the two nations are anchored not only in geography but also in shared history, mutual trust, and a common vision for the future. He noted that Seychelles occupies a special position in India’s Vision MAHASAGAR — Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions — as a maritime neighbour and trusted partner.

The Prime Minister welcomed the MoU on training Seychelles civil servants in India, and said New Delhi would also share its digital governance experience under the digital transformation partnership. In the health sector, he reaffirmed India’s role as a reliable partner through the supply of affordable medicines, promotion of medical tourism, and cooperation in strengthening healthcare infrastructure.

Diplomatic Milestone Visit

President Herminie described his trip as a reflection of the enduring friendship and mutual respect between the two nations. This marks his first visit to India since assuming office in October last year and coincides with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Seychelles remains a strategically important maritime partner for India in the Indian Ocean region and features prominently in New Delhi’s outreach to the Global South.

Later in the day, President Herminie is scheduled to meet President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan as part of his official engagements.
