New Delhi: In a major boost to its air defence capabilities, India has approved the procurement of five additional S-400 Triumf missile systems from Russia, further strengthening its multi-layered security architecture.
The decision is part of India’s broader defence modernisation drive aimed at enhancing preparedness against evolving aerial threats, including fighter jets, drones, and ballistic missiles.
India had earlier signed a deal with Russia in 2018 for five S-400 units, several of which have already been inducted into service, with the remaining deliveries expected soon. With the latest approval, the total number of systems in India’s arsenal is set to double, significantly expanding its air defence coverage.

Defence officials consider the S-400 a critical asset due to its long-range tracking and interception capabilities, enabling it to engage multiple targets simultaneously across varying altitudes and distances. Its deployment has already reinforced India’s strategic deterrence along sensitive border regions.
The fresh procurement also underscores the continuity of defence cooperation between India and Russia, structured to navigate geopolitical sensitivities and potential sanction-related challenges.
