Owaisi Withdraws Support from AJUP as Kabir Sting Video Sparks Controversy

Owaisi Withdraws Support from AJUP as Kabir Sting Video Sparks Controversy

News Desk: West Bengal’s political landscape witnessed fresh turbulence after a sting video controversy involving Humayun Kabir triggered a major fallout, prompting All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen chief Asaduddin Owaisi to snap ties with Kabir’s outfit, the Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP).

Kabir, once associated with the Trinamool Congress (TMC), had launched his own party after being suspended and later aligned with AIMIM ahead of the upcoming state elections. However, the alliance has now collapsed amid mounting controversy.

AIMIM Walks Out

Announcing the decision on X, Owaisi made it clear that AIMIM would no longer remain in alliance with AJUP following the emergence of the sting video.

He stressed that his party cannot be linked to any political discourse that raises concerns about the integrity or interests of Muslim communities. Declaring a shift in strategy, Owaisi said AIMIM will now contest the West Bengal elections independently.

Highlighting socio-economic concerns, he remarked that Muslims in Bengal remain among the most deprived despite decades of so-called secular governance, asserting that AIMIM aims to provide an independent political voice to marginalised groups.

Explosive Allegations in Sting

The controversy erupted after senior TMC leaders released a purported sting video allegedly featuring Kabir. In the footage, he is claimed to have spoken about links with leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party and referenced a massive ₹1,000 crore deal aimed at politically undercutting the ruling party.

The video also allegedly captures Kabir making controversial remarks about influencing Muslim voters. However, the authenticity of the footage has not been independently verified.

Senior TMC leader Firhad Hakim called for an Enforcement Directorate probe, accusing Kabir of betraying the interests of the Muslim community.

Hakim lashed out, alleging that Kabir conspired to undermine “Muslim self-respect” for political gain, and urged his remaining supporters to reconsider their stance.

Kabir Rejects Charges

Dismissing the allegations outright, Kabir termed the sting video “AI-generated” and politically motivated. He downplayed the impact of AIMIM’s withdrawal, asserting that his party’s prospects remain intact.

“The video will not affect my political future. I have built this party on my own strength,” Kabir said, signalling his intent to stay in the electoral fray despite the setback.

With alliances shifting and accusations flying thick and fast, the controversy has added a new layer of intrigue to the high-stakes battle for West Bengal.
