Say Goodbye to Toll Hassles: Govt Introduces Rs 3,000 FASTag Pass for Private Vehicles

From August 15, Travel 200 Times on National Highways with ₹3,000 FASTag Annual Pass

New Delhi:  Starting August 15, 2025, private car owners in India can drive across National Highways with greater ease and affordability, thanks to a new FASTag-based Annual Pass initiative announced by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari.

In a major policy shift aimed at promoting seamless and cost-effective highway travel, the government will roll out an annual toll pass priced at Rs 3,000 for non-commercial private vehicles, including cars, jeeps, and vans. The pass will be activated through the existing FASTag system and will be valid for one year or 200 trips, whichever is earlier. Each toll crossing on a National Highway will count as one trip, and a round trip will be considered two.

Key Features of the Rs 3,000 FASTag Annual Pass:

  • Launch Date: August 15, 2025

  • Validity: One year or 200 toll trips

  • Eligibility: Non-commercial private vehicles (cars, jeeps, vans)

  • Activation: Via Rajmarg Yatra App or official NHAI & MoRTH websites

  • Coverage: Applicable only on National Highways (not valid on state highways)

  • Savings: Reduces yearly toll cost from approx. Rs 10,000 to just Rs 3,000

In a post on social media platform ‘X’, Gadkari hailed the move as a “transformative step” in India’s transport policy. “This annual pass will significantly reduce the financial burden on private vehicle owners while ensuring a smoother highway experience,” he said. A dedicated portal for activation and renewal will be made available soon on the Rajmarg Yatra App and the websites of NHAI and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).

The minister added that this initiative will directly address concerns about toll plazas situated within short distances—often less than the mandated 60 km gap. “Currently, users pay between Rs 50 and Rs 100 per toll crossing. With the annual pass, this drops to roughly Rs 15 per trip,” Gadkari explained in a video statement.

FASTag, which uses RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology, enables automatic toll deduction without halting at toll plazas. While this system is already in place, only monthly passes worth Rs 340 were previously available—limited to frequent users of a single toll plaza. The new annual pass expands this convenience nationwide.

However, the annual pass will not apply to state highway tolls. While FASTag will still be valid on those roads, deductions from the Rs 3,000 pass will be restricted to National Highways only.

An FAQ issued by the Ministry stated that the pass will be activated only after successful verification of the vehicle and the associated FASTag. Payment for the base year 2025–26 must be made via the Rajmarg Yatra mobile app or the NHAI website.

The Ministry has been deliberating on various models to make toll collection more efficient, including distance-based tolling, though no final decision has been made on that front yet.

With this initiative, the government aims to reduce toll disputes, decongest entry points, and provide millions of private vehicle owners with a smoother, faster, and more predictable travel experience across India’s vast highway network.
