Parag Jain Appointed RAW Chief

New Delhi: The Centre on Saturday appointed senior IPS officer Parag Jain as the next Secretary of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), India’s external intelligence agency. A 1989-batch Punjab cadre officer, Jain will take charge from July 1, succeeding incumbent Ravi Sinha for a two-year tenure.

Known in intelligence circles as a “super sleuth,” Jain brings deep operational expertise, especially in human and technical intelligence integration (HUMINT & TECHINT)—a hallmark of several successful covert missions.

Track Record: Operation Sindoor & Kashmir Expertise

Jain played a pivotal role in Operation Sindoor, where his intelligence inputs enabled precision missile strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Though the strikes were swift, sources say the intelligence groundwork took years to assemble.

His extensive field experience in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly during the abrogation of Article 370 and Balakot airstrikes, makes him a crucial figure in India’s external security framework. He has served in various key roles across Punjab, Chandigarh, and Ludhiana during critical phases of militancy.

International Role & Khalistan Watch

While posted abroad, Jain represented India in Canada and Sri Lanka, notably working to counter the growing Khalistan ecosystem in North America. His early alerts on the threat reportedly shaped Delhi’s strategic posture on the issue.

New Challenges for RAW

Jain takes over RAW at a time of intense geopolitical churn, with criticism over the agency’s perceived lapses during recent Maldives and Bangladesh crises, and its failure to anticipate the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam. These concerns have intensified following Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir’s anti-India rhetoric and his push to escalate cross-border terrorism.

As India’s intelligence apparatus braces for complex global and regional threats, Jain’s appointment signals a push for operational reform and strategic sharpness.
