Modi Urges Citizens to Buy Made-in-India Goods Amid Tariff War with US

Varanasi: Amid escalating trade tensions with the United States, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday made a strong pitch for Swadeshi, urging Indians to buy and promote products made in the country.

Addressing a public rally in his Lok Sabha constituency of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, the Prime Minister called for a renewed commitment to the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Vocal for Local’ campaigns.

Calling for economic self-reliance, Modi appealed to both consumers and businesses to support Indian-made goods, especially as the country heads into the festive and wedding seasons. “We must resolve to buy only products made in India. This is the time to strengthen our resolve for Swadeshi. Selling and purchasing Indian products will be a true service to the nation,” he said.

Invoking Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy, the Prime Minister linked his call to the historic Swadeshi movement launched during India’s freedom struggle. “Our tribute to Bapu will be complete when we support Swadeshi in letter and spirit, particularly in these uncertain global times,” he added.

In a further push to promote domestic tourism, Modi reiterated his appeal to avoid destination weddings abroad. “Why spend crores on weddings in foreign lands when India has countless beautiful places? This Swadeshi mantra will shape our economy and our future,” he said.

India-US Tariff Dispute

The Prime Minister’s remarks come in the backdrop of rising trade friction with the United States, which recently imposed a steep 25% tariff on all Indian imports, accompanied by additional penalties. US President Donald Trump has publicly criticized India for continuing oil purchases from Russia, exacerbating tensions between the two countries.

The tariff hike is expected to impact several Indian export sectors, including pharmaceuticals, textiles, and gems and jewelry, prompting New Delhi to explore domestic resilience and self-reliant alternatives.
