EC Flags 3 Lakh Voters in Bihar, Many Suspected Bangladeshi and Nepali

Patna: The Election Commission has issued notices to nearly three lakh people in Bihar after doubts were raised about their citizenship status during the ongoing intensive revision of the electoral rolls.

Officials said that during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, many individuals failed to provide valid documents along with their enumeration forms. On verification, their citizenship was found to be questionable, with a significant number suspected to be from Bangladesh and Nepal.

According to EC sources, the bulk of these notices have been served in border districts such as East Champaran, West Champaran, Madhubani, Kishanganj, Purnia, Katihar, Araria, and Supaul. These areas either share direct boundaries with Nepal or are situated close to international borders.

The Commission has asked the individuals concerned to furnish proof of Indian citizenship within the stipulated time. Authorities say the scrutiny is part of efforts to ensure that only genuine citizens are included in the voters’ list ahead of upcoming elections.
