Bokaro Steel Plant Faces Heat Over Repeated Worker Accidents

Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) Accident: Worker Injured, Death Reported in Recent Mishaps

Bokaro: A contract worker was severely injured in a fresh mishap at SAIL’s Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) in the early hours of Friday, adding to a worrying series of accidents at the facility.

The incident took place around 4 am at the Cold Rolling Mill (CRM). Prem Chand Oraon (38), employed with M/s Sumit Enterprises, sustained grievous injuries when a sheet cutter fell on his leg while he was working on the coil cutting line. The impact severed his toes and four fingers. Co-workers rushed him to Bokaro General Hospital (BGH), where doctors later confirmed his condition as stable.

This is the second major accident at the SAIL-run plant within six days. Last Saturday, three contract workers were critically injured in the SMS-2 unit after a crane rope snapped, spilling molten metal and sparking a massive fire.

The victims — Brajesh Mahatha, Praveen, and Om Prakash — suffered severe burns. While Praveen and Om Prakash remain stable, Brajesh succumbed to his injuries on Friday morning after battling for life for a week.

Back-to-Back Accidents at BSL Raise Safety Concerns

Union leaders have strongly condemned the repeated mishaps, alleging gross lapses in safety standards. Reports suggest that multiple incidents involving crane failures and molten metal spills have already injured several contract workers at BSL this year, intensifying demands for immediate corrective measures.
