SAIL Supplies Special Steel for INS Androt, Strengthening Indian Navy’s Might

SAIL’s Indigenous Steel Fuels India’s Maritime Strength

New Delhi: In a major stride toward India’s defence self-reliance, the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has supplied the entire special-grade steel for INS Androt, which was commissioned into the Indian Navy today. The achievement underscores SAIL’s pivotal role in strengthening the nation’s maritime infrastructure.

INS Androt is the second warship in the Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) series, following INS Arnala, commissioned earlier on June 18, 2025.

SAIL, the country’s largest public sector steelmaker and a Maharatna company, provided indigenous special-grade steel—including HR sheets and plates—for all eight ASW-SWC warships being built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE), including INS Arnala and INS Androt.

The specialised steel was produced and supplied from SAIL’s Bokaro, Bhilai, and Rourkela Steel Plants, showcasing the strength of India’s domestic steel ecosystem.

The commissioning of INS Androt not only reinforces India’s growing maritime capabilities but also reflects the spirit of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India) in defence production.

SAIL reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the nation’s strategic infrastructure, stating that it will continue to develop high-grade indigenous steel for critical defence projects, strengthening India’s pursuit of technological and industrial self-reliance.
