Stealth Frigate Taragiri Joins Indian Navy Fleet, Boosts Indigenous Naval Power

Mumbai: The Indian Navy has officially received its fourth advanced Nilgiri-class stealth frigate, Taragiri, marking another major stride in India’s push for self-reliance in cutting-edge warship development and maritime defence capability.

Delivered under Project 17A, Taragiri is a next-generation, multi-mission frigate engineered to handle evolving security and surveillance challenges at sea. The Ministry of Defence said the induction strengthens India’s indigenous warship-building ecosystem and underlines the nation’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision in naval engineering.

The vessel carries forward the legacy of the original INS Taragiri, a Leander-class frigate that proudly served the Navy for over three decades between 1980 and 2013. The newly built Taragiri represents a leap forward in stealth features, weapons integration, automation, and survivability at sea—offering a significantly more advanced arsenal than the earlier Shivalik-class ships.

Taragiri is the fourth Project 17A ship delivered within the past eleven months, with the remaining three vessels slated for sequential delivery by August next year, further fortifying India’s maritime strength.
