Nadella revealed the announcement on X shortly after meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the latter’s residence in New Delhi.

Big Push for Cloud, Compute and AI Skills

The massive investment aims to accelerate India’s race to position itself as a global AI powerhouse. As per early reports, Microsoft’s roadmap includes:

  • Scaling advanced cloud and computing infrastructure

  • Supporting secure and sovereign data systems across critical sectors

The company said the initiative aligns closely with India’s broader digital transformation strategy, which focuses on deploying AI in healthcare, education, manufacturing, governance, and financial services.

Part of Microsoft’s Global AI Expansion

Nadella’s announcement is also seen as part of Microsoft’s worldwide push to deepen AI adoption. The CEO has repeatedly highlighted how AI-driven tools like Microsoft 365 Copilot are reshaping productivity and redefining the future of work across industries.

Govt Yet to Detail Implementation Plan

While New Delhi has welcomed the announcement, the government has not yet released a detailed operational roadmap for the investment. Senior officials, however, describe the commitment as a transformative step in strengthening India’s digital and AI capabilities.
