PM Modi Arrives in Oman for Two-Day Visit, Set to Sign Landmark Trade Pact

News Desk: Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi arrived in Oman on Tuesday evening for a two-day visit, marking the final leg of his three-nation tour after successful engagements in Jordan and Ethiopia. The visit is expected to give fresh momentum to India–Oman ties, with the signing of a major free trade agreement high on the agenda.

At the Muscat airport, PM Modi was received by Oman’s Deputy Prime Minister for Defence Affairs, Sayyid Shihab bin Tarik Al Said. The two leaders discussed ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation and further advance the strategic partnership between the two countries.

The Prime Minister is visiting Oman at the invitation of Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, the Head of State of the Sultanate. Modi is scheduled to hold talks with the Sultan on Wednesday, during which both sides will review bilateral relations and explore new areas of collaboration.

A key highlight of the visit will be the signing of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), a free trade pact aimed at boosting trade, investment and economic cooperation. The agreement will be signed by Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and Oman’s Minister of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, Qais Al Yousef, in the presence of Prime Minister Modi and Sultan Haitham.

In a message shared on social media, Modi described Oman as “a land of enduring friendship and deep historical connections with India,” saying the visit offers an opportunity to add new energy and direction to the partnership.

Following his arrival, the Prime Minister received a warm welcome from members of the Indian diaspora in Muscat. Children and cultural groups presented a vibrant mix of performances, including Omani traditional dance, Indian classical forms such as Kuchipudi and Kathak, Rajasthan’s Ghoomer and Karnataka’s folk dance Yakshagana. The atmosphere was marked by enthusiastic chants of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Vande Mataram.”

During his stay, Modi will also address a joint India–Oman business forum, interact with students and engage with members of the Indian community. Notably, several Indian students in Oman regularly follow the Prime Minister’s Pariksha Pe Charcha programme as a source of motivation and stress relief.

The visit holds added significance as India and Oman celebrate 70 years of diplomatic relations this year, underscoring their longstanding historical, cultural and economic ties.
