DRDO Successfully Completes User Evaluation Trials of Akash-NG

New Delhi: India on Tuesday marked a major milestone in its indigenous defence programme with the successful completion of User Evaluation Trials (UET) of the Akash-NG (Next Generation) surface-to-air missile system, clearing a crucial step towards its induction into operational service.

The trials were conducted under realistic operational conditions to validate the missile system’s performance against a range of aerial threats. The missile consistently met all mission objectives, demonstrating high accuracy, reliability and responsiveness across multiple engagement scenarios.

Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Akash-NG represents a significant upgrade over the existing Akash air defence system. It is equipped with an indigenously developed Radio Frequency seeker, an advanced dual-pulse solid rocket motor, and a modern multi-function radar and command-and-control architecture, enabling faster reaction time and greater interception range.

During the user trials, the missile successfully intercepted targets at low, medium and high altitudes, showcasing its capability to counter fighter aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles and other fast-moving aerial threats. The trials were witnessed by user representatives, including personnel from the Indian Air Force, along with senior scientists and engineers.

Defence officials described the successful trials as a major boost to India’s layered air defence shield, reinforcing the country’s focus on self-reliance in critical military technologies under the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.

With the mpletion of user evaluation trials, the Akash-NG missile system is now poised for formal induction, significantly strengthening India’s air defence preparedness and operational readiness.
