Governor’s Clarion Call at BBMKU: Educate One Child to Transform Society

Dhanbad: Striking a strong chord on social responsibility, Santosh Gangwar, Governor of Jharkhand, on Friday urged students to pledge themselves to educating at least one underprivileged child, calling it a powerful step towards breaking the cycle of illiteracy, poverty and inequality.

Addressing the convocation ceremony of Binod Bihari Mahto Koylanchal University (BBMKU) at the Town Hall as chief guest, the Governor said education carries a moral duty beyond personal success. “If every educated youth takes responsibility for one child, the foundations of social inequality will begin to crumble,” he said.

Emphasising the larger purpose of education, Gangwar cautioned students against limiting their ambitions to degrees alone. He called for greater focus on research, innovation and ethical leadership, saying education must act as a guiding force for society and the nation. “Knowledge should strengthen morality, honesty and national character,” he added.

Describing convocation as a “golden milestone” in a student’s life, the Governor said it marks not just the end of an academic journey, but the beginning of social responsibility. On the occasion, degrees were conferred on 164 PhD scholars and gold medallists of the university.

BBMKU Vice-Chancellor Ram Kumar and senior university officials were present at the ceremony.

Speaking to the media later, Governor Gangwar—also the Chancellor of state universities—said the process of appointing vice-chancellors in institutions where posts are vacant is underway and is likely to be completed by next month. He expressed confidence that long-pending issues in Jharkhand’s universities would be resolved soon.

Acknowledging challenges in higher education, the Governor noted that university enrolment in the state remains low, but assured that steps are being taken to regularise academic sessions and attract more students towards higher education, ensuring smoother and more effective functioning of institutions.
