Cuba Seeks Multi-Sector Trade Push with India, Eyes Clean Energy, Biotech and Tourism

Kolkata: Cuba is looking to significantly deepen its economic partnership with India, targeting a wide spectrum of sectors—from agro-industry and biotechnology to healthcare, IT, renewable energy, sports and tourism—Cuban Ambassador to India Juan Carlos Marsan Aguilera said on Saturday.

Addressing a special session on India–Cuba Trade and Economic Cooperation organised by the Merchants’ Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MCCI) in Kolkata, Aguilera highlighted Cuba’s global strength in biotechnology and pharmaceuticals, noting that the country’s biopharma products are currently exported to 45 nations.

He said Cuba is rapidly moving away from fossil fuels towards renewable energy, opening the door for Indian companies to collaborate on clean energy and green infrastructure projects.

To attract foreign investment, Aguilera pointed out that Cuba allows companies access to land for business purposes and has introduced an electronic visa facility to simplify travel and investment processes.

On tourism, the ambassador underlined Cuba’s vast potential, backed by 10 international airports, three cruise terminals and 10 international marinas, creating major opportunities for joint ventures in tourism and allied sectors.

He also praised the International Kolkata Book Fair and said Cuba is keen to participate in the event next year, stressing that cultural exchanges are vital to strengthening bilateral ties.

Prof Maiky Diaz Perez, First Secretary at the Embassy of Cuba in India, said deeper cooperation between the two countries could boost people-to-people connections. He emphasised the need to identify focused, result-driven areas of collaboration to turn diplomatic intent into measurable outcomes.
