118 MPs Back No-Confidence Notice on Om Birla
New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has directed the Lok Sabha Secretariat to correct procedural deficiencies in the notice of no-confidence motion moved by Opposition MPs seeking his removal from office, instead of rejecting it outright, parliamentary sources said.
The Secretariat had flagged shortcomings in the notice, noting that Opposition parties cited four incidents from February last year — grounds that could have led to the motion being dismissed under House rules. However, Birla instructed officials to rectify the gaps and process the notice in line with established procedures, while ensuring swift action as per parliamentary norms.
The motion, submitted to the Lok Sabha Secretary General by Congress-led Opposition parties, is expected to be taken up during the second phase of the Budget Session scheduled from March 9 to April 2.
Opposition members have accused Birla of functioning in a partisan manner in the House. The notice bears signatures of 118 MPs from parties including the Congress, DMK, Samajwadi Party, RJD and Left formations, while Trinamool Congress MPs did not join the signatories.
In a related development, Birla has decided on moral grounds to stay away from House proceedings until the issue concerning the no-confidence notice is resolved.
