Tehran: Iran has postponed the funeral ceremony of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei after powerful explosions were reported in the capital and tensions with Israel and the United States intensified, raising serious security concerns.
The state funeral, which was expected to draw massive crowds from across the country, had been scheduled to take place in Tehran with a large public procession and mourning ceremonies. However, Iranian authorities decided to delay the event after the security situation deteriorated following fresh blasts and continued military exchanges linked to the widening regional conflict.
According to Iranian officials, the decision was taken to ensure public safety and allow security forces to stabilise the situation in the capital before holding a large-scale public gathering.

Explosions Rock Tehran
The postponement came shortly after loud explosions were heard in several parts of Tehran, reportedly linked to ongoing strikes and counter-attacks amid the escalating confrontation between Iran and its adversaries.
The conflict has intensified sharply in recent days, with missile launches, air strikes and retaliatory attacks raising fears of a broader regional war. Military activity and air defence operations around the capital have further complicated preparations for the high-profile funeral ceremony.
Authorities had expected millions of mourners to attend the farewell procession for Khamenei, who ruled Iran for more than three decades and was one of the most influential figures in the Middle East.
Nation in Mourning
Following his death, Iran declared a period of national mourning as political and religious leaders paid tribute to the longtime leader. State media reported that elaborate funeral arrangements were being prepared to honour him with full state and religious rites.
However, the ongoing military escalation and security risks forced officials to halt preparations for the public ceremony.
Succession Debate Intensifies
Khamenei’s death has also triggered intense political discussions about the future leadership of the Islamic Republic. Iran’s Assembly of Experts, the constitutional body responsible for appointing the Supreme Leader, has reportedly begun deliberations over his successor.
Among the names being widely discussed is Mojtaba Khamenei, the late leader’s son, who is believed to hold significant influence within Iran’s political and security establishment.
Uncertain Timeline
Iranian authorities have not yet announced a new date for the funeral. Officials said the ceremony will be rescheduled once the security situation in Tehran improves.
With explosions continuing and the regional conflict showing no immediate signs of easing, the postponement reflects the growing instability surrounding Iran at a moment of historic political transition.
