Bokaro: Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL), a major unit of Steel Authority of India Limited, has achieved a significant breakthrough in value-added steel production after four new high-strength steel grades received certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
The approval, granted by BIS Jamshedpur, expands the existing BIS licence for the ISC-410 grade under IS 513 (Part 2) to include four additional High Strength Low Alloy (HSLA) cold-rolled steel grades — ISC 440 LA, ISC 470 LA, ISC 510 LA and ISC 550 LA.
The certification brings these advanced steel grades under nationally recognised quality standards, paving the way for wider acceptance across key industrial sectors.
Boost for Automotive and Engineering Sectors
The newly certified ISC-LA series grades are designed to offer high tensile strength, better formability and superior weldability, making them particularly suitable for the automotive and heavy engineering industries, where strength, durability and weight optimisation are critical.
Officials said the BIS approval will help standardise these specialized grades and strengthen BSL’s presence in the high-value steel segment.
Leadership Applauds Team Effort
Priya Ranjan, Director-in-Charge of Bokaro Steel Plant, congratulated the plant’s teams for the achievement and said it aligns with SAIL’s strategy to enhance product quality and diversify the product mix. He expressed confidence that the development will help BSL respond effectively to evolving demands in the domestic steel market while ensuring greater customer satisfaction.
Anup Kumar Dutt, Executive Director (Operations), also praised the coordinated efforts of multidisciplinary teams, noting that the success reflects BSL’s focused push towards expanding value-added steel production.
Step Toward Atmanirbhar Steel
The certification is expected to reduce reliance on imported advanced steel grades and support the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative by strengthening indigenous manufacturing capabilities.
With the addition of these BIS-certified HSLA grades, Bokaro Steel Plant has further expanded its product portfolio while reinforcing its commitment to quality, innovation and globally competitive steel solutions for industrial customers.
